Moves We Missed: Liquid from 2015-18

As dedicated Counter-Strike and Liquid fans know, the North American favorites were not always the powerhouses we know them as today. Here we take a look at the many moves that Liquid looked to put in place that never came to be.

2015

Proposed move: -FugLy; +allu

Announced via HLTV, Liquid, in desperate need of some stronger AWP presence in the server, contacted Aleksi "allu" Jalli to trial in place of the benched Jacob "FugLy" Medina. The Finnish player accepted Liquid’s offer but their first and only event together would be the ELEAGUE Road to Vegas Qualifier, where the team would drop out at the hands of Jason "jasonR" Ruchelski’s DOGMEN in a best-of-three loss. Following this result, allu decided against staying in North America and opted out of the trial early.

This first alternate version of Liquid would have been:

  • Eric "adreN" Hoag

  • Spencer "Hiko" Martin

  • Nicholas "nitr0" Cannella

  • Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski

  • Aleksi "allu" Jalli

2016

Proposed move: -s1mple; +oskar

Once Aleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev and Liquid had decided to part ways, the team found themselves in search of yet another star sniper. In the absence of such a server presence as s1mple, HellRaisers’ benched Tomáš "oskar" Štastný was their next best bet according to Duncan "Thorin" Shields. Alas, they missed their window of opportunity by just days as oskar had signed with mousesports. This was confirmed by Spencer "Hiko" Martin who was a member of Liquid at the time.

With the acquisition of oskar, the roster could have looked like:

  • Spencer "Hiko" Martin

  • Nicholas "nitr0" Cannella

  • Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski

  • Josh "jdm64" Marzano

  • Tomáš "oskar" Štastný

2017

Proposed move: -Pimp; +ropz

Yet another Liquid inquiry turned mousesports pickup was Robin "ropz" Kool, who would have joined in place of Pimp ensuing his request for transfer. After assisting in convincing ropz's mother to allow him to play the game professionally, ropz had to decline due to his spot on the team not being set in stone and wanting to remain in Europe, leading to his mousesports induction.

It’s worth mentioning that if this move had gone through, Twistzz would have never found his way into the team and would have more than likely remained in his concurrent team, Misfits.

If the pieces had fallen into place, Liquid would have been:

  • Nicholas "nitr0" Cannella

  • Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski

  • Josh "jdm64" Marzano

  • Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz

  • Robin "ropz" Kool

Proposed move: -Pimp, -jdm64; +RUSH, +mixwell:

Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz had left OpTic just one month prior to this rumor. Seeing as OpTic was struggling to find form with a stable fifth player, it was Will "RUSH" Wierzba and Oscar "mixwell" Cañellas Colocho that Liquid took interest in, as reported by the contemporary Slingshot Esports writer Jarek "DeKay" Lewis. It was described as having a “50/50 chance of happening,” and eventually prompted Liquid to maintain possession of Josh "jdm64" Marzano and acquire the aforementioned Twistzz from his contract with Misfits.

If the OpTic reunion were to have occurred, the team might have been:

  • Nicholas "nitr0" Cannella

  • Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski

  • Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz

  • Will "RUSH" Wierzba

  • Oscar "mixwell" Cañellas Colocho

2018

Proposed move: -?; +coldzera:

Dissatisfied with MIBR’s performance following the additions of Jacky "Stewie2K" Yip and Tarik "tarik" Celik, Marcelo "coldzera" David debated the notion of reuniting with former teammate Epitácio "TACO" de Melo and coach Wilton "zews" Prado in a more coherent Team Liquid. In lieu of Liquid, he settled for his mix of North American and Brazilian teammates. Five months would pass and he would get his wish in a different way, with MIBR making a trade with Team Liquid of Stewie2K for both TACO and zews to return home.

It is unclear who coldzera would have replaced, but the roster would have contained:

  • Nicholas "nitr0" Cannella

  • Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski

  • Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken

  • Keith "NAF" Markovic

  • Epitácio "TACO" de Melo

  • Marcelo "coldzera" David
