JoJo: “We’re here to have fun and, you know, fuck some shit up on the way”

Earlier this week, Third Impact faced off against Thunder Logic in the NA Advanced Season 34 grand finals. Coming from the lower bracket, Third Impact started the series with a 0-1 deficit before losing the first map, Mirage, in heartbreaking fashion to a 1v3 Ace from Sean 'Inseaniac' Morrison. But thanks in part to a monstrous performance from Wesley 'viz' Harris, Third Impact was able to dismantle Thunder Logic in the final three maps of the series, completing an impressive reverse sweep and securing promotion to MDL for Season 35.

The Third Impact team formed in August of last year from the remnants of the former MDL team Stay Frosty. Following a 10-6 season and a pair of roster changes, including a new IGL and moving Josiah 'JoJo' Jimenez to the primary AWP role, it was hard to know what to expect heading into the season. And after a slow 2-3 start, Third Impact looked destined to miss out on the MDL Relegation tournament once again. However, they were able to turn their season around and eliminate preseason favorites Big Chillin and RBG from the playoffs before taking down Thunder Logic in the finals. JoJo talked with us about team mentality as well as his previous and current expectations for the team.

When the team formed last August, were you expecting to be making MDL just one year later?

“Yes, I expected it probably last season, to be honest, and I really think we would have if we didn’t stop practicing and stop playing the game individually also. Cause we all had like 10 hours in the past two weeks going into playoffs.”

Did your expectations change coming into this season, with new teammates and you stepping into the AWP role?

“No, I was expecting to make playoffs, and surprise people with how good we could be. [I] wasn’t expecting to win it all, I thought we would make MDL. But I wasn’t super expecting to, you know, win all of Advanced, I was expecting RBG to not shake this time. I feel like everybody was, but everybody forgot to take in the shake factor.”

You guys tend to try to have more fun in your league matches, using guns like the M249. How important do you think that mentality has been to your success this season?

“Yeah, when we were deciding our fifth, we were taking into account their personality, we wanted to have fun. We started this team with a bunch of friends because we wanted to have fun. We went back to Main, Mike had an MDL offer, but, everyone wanted to go back to Main, play with all of us, because that’s what we’re here for. we’re here to have fun and, you know, fuck some shit up on the way. Fun is definitely a big factor. If we’re not enjoying the game, there’s no reason to play it.”

Various professional teams and players have attributed their team’s success with being able to have fun. Would you say that this is a large part of your team’s success?

“I think it’s a pretty big part. And it’s a big reason that, yeah we’ve had roster changes, but not cutting anybody. I think it’s a big reason for any team's longevity. If you guys don’t enjoy playing with each other, because matches can get pretty stressful, so being able to, with the same people, blow off steam, it will make your vision of those people way better, you’re going to hate your teammates way less. This happens to every team that finally makes MDL, if they don’t do good right away, they immediately make roster changes. I think if you don’t enjoy the people you’re playing with on a personal level that’s always gonna happen. If you guys are friends and are going to stick it out, and stick together, you’re gonna have way more longevity.”

I remember back when you guys were in Main, you guys generally always trolled a bit more in scrims, not that you were playing any differently in league matches. With Insane coming in as your new IGL this season, how did he change your team's practice and attitude in-game?

“Yeah, we definitely trolled more in matches than scrims. But yes, Insane is way more serious. He’s very dedicated and puts a lot of work in and wants everything to be very serious, gamer moment. But he knows what he signed up for, so he tries to make it more serious, and so does switchy. We try to make it less, us playing [against] a worse team so we are just like fucking around because we know we could literally do anything and win. Like when we scrimmed your old team.”

As far as next season goes, you guys are obviously taking a big step up, playing Winners League Invite, MDL, and potentially Mythic League Invite, playing teams like Recon 5, Team One, Chaos, and Triumph. What are your expectations for how well you guys will be able to perform against teams of that caliber?

“I think we’ll be able to perform pretty well. I’m not expecting to just troll against Chaos and still be able to win, obviously. But, I think we’ll be able to hold our own and surprise people as well.”
