IEM Chicago Preview and a Conversation with Envy’s Sam “s0m” Oh

Envy skated through the IEM Chicago closed qualifiers with a flawless 6-0 record. Envy’s young rifler impressed in the event, finishing fourth in rating at 1.30. After the qualifier, s0m answered some questions for me. Below the interview is a video preview of s0m from the IEM Chicago qualifier. In the video, I go through clips showcasing different elements of the riflers’ impressive game.

What kind of additions has Aran 'Sonic' Groesbeek brought to the lineup, coming from a different realm of CS? How has he changed the team besides his individual skill?

I really enjoy playing with Sonic. He has a lot of individual skill. He knows when to be funny and when to be serious. He really changes the team environment.

You had to face off against fellow young talent Owen 'oBo' Schlatter to qualify for Chicago, is that rivalry something you think about when you’re facing Complexity?

I personally don’t think about that, no matter who I am playing. At the end of the day, it’s a 5v5 no matter who it is.

Being only 17, many young players trying to grind through the circuit look up to you. The grind can be very taxing, any advice you can give anyone trying to become pro like you?

As for tips on the grind, you just have to grind through it all no matter what the ups and downs are. Fake it ‘til you make it.

Many pros have their own personal practices. From aim_botz to retakes. What is your preferred method for warm up?

I deathmatch and aim_botz for an hour or so until I feel crisp.
